SMT and Dragon Quest are the only good JRPG series. I loved Final Fantasy back in the day but I wouldn't play any of them now. Maybe XII.

VI is the only one I have the patience to play for long these days, and I still don't have the patience to finish it. Maybe V if I tried it again. Mostly I just don't have the patience for video games that require more than about 10 hours of gameplay though.

The Dead Flag Blues
The car is on fire, and there’s no driver at the wheel, and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides, and a dark wind blows. The government is corrupt, and we’re on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn. We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death. The sun has fallen down, and the billboards are all leering, and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

It went like this: The buildings tumbled in on themselves; mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair. The skyline was beautiful on fire, all twisted metal stretching upwards, everything washed in a thin orange haze. I said, “Kiss me, you are beautiful; these are truly the last days.” You grabbed my hand, and we fell into it like a daydream or a fever.

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down; for sure it’s the valley of death. I open up my wallet, and it’s full of blood.

The Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thoughts, that’s their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thoughts. I am thinking of chewing, so maybe that’s the connection they’re trying to make.

I have this feeling man, ’cause you know, it’s just a handful of people who run everything, you know… that’s true, it’s provable. It’s not… I’m not a fucking conspiracy nut; it’s provable. A handful, a very small elite, run and own these corporations, which include the mainstream media. I have this feeling that whoever is elected president, like Clinton was, no matter what you promise on the campaign trail – blah, blah, blah – when you win, you go into this smoke-filled room with the twelve industrialist capitalist scumfucks who got you in there. And you’re in this smoky room, and this little film screen comes down, and a big guy with a cigar goes, “Roll the film.” And it’s a shot of the Kennedy assassination from an angle you’ve never seen before that looks suspiciously like it’s from the grassy knoll. And then the screen goes up and the lights come up, and they go to the new president, “Any questions?” “Er, just what my agenda is.” “First we bomb Baghdad.” “You got it…”

They don’t want the voice of reason spoken, folks, ’cause otherwise, we’d be free. Otherwise, we wouldn’t believe their fucking horseshit lies, nor the fucking propaganda machine of the mainstream media and buy their horseshit products that we don’t fucking need and become a third world consumer fucking plantation, which is what we’re becoming. Fuck them! They are liars and murderers. All governments are liars and murderers, and I am now Jesus, and this is MY compound.

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly coloured and it’s very loud and it’s fun for awhile. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, “hey – don't worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride…” And we… kill those people. Haha. “Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.” It’s just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King mudered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan… wounded. But it doesn’t matter because it’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. Thank you; you’ve been great.

I did finish Super Metroid, the original Zelda (both quests), and A Link to the Past like a year ago. Those are about 10 hours, right?

But yeah, in general that's probably true.

Yeah, I've tried to replay them but I generally just don't have the attention span to finish video games anymore. Like Aaron, I like a complete, ten hour experience with a beginning, middle and end. I like a narrative. In my advanced age, all I want to play are games like The Last of Us.

Last game I finished was Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Wasn't as good as Human Revolution. I'm going to go balls out and say that I revisited the original not too long back and it sucks. I'm sure that that is somehow sacrilege to bad mouth a supposed classic that everyone must view as epic and tail curlingly great, but it's just my opinion. I didn't enjoy it. The controls were clunky and it was difficult to get used to.

Thank god for modern games.

Been eyeing up Dishonoured 2 and Civilisation 6 but I have too many games unplayed.

I also bought that Call of Duty Infinite Warfare for £25 that includes Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remasted. That's usually about £80. Haven't touched the newer game. Played a bit of the remastered on. It's ok.

Also bought Battlefield 1. I quite enjoyed the beta, but DICE are shit and fucked up the game for Nvidia SLI owners. It was working fine, then they patched some stuff, now SLI is fucked and there haven't been any attempts to fix it, only for DICE to state they don't officially support multi-GPU setups, but fans are rightly pissed off because it was fine, now it's not.

Then I realised I cba with FPS games that much any more, unless it's somewhat interesting like Deus Ex or Dishonoured.

The Last Of Us is still hands down the best game I've played in years. Nothing has topped it, nor come close. I'm super fucking stoked for Part 2, since it was announced and it has Joel and Ellie again. There were talks a year or so back about them doing something entirely different with TLOU and that honestly would've been a terrible move. Ellie and Joel are that game and without them, while I trust Naughty Dog to make a good game, it'd not be the same.

That and I have a huge mancrush on Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson is a great actress as Ellie.

If I ever pick up a PS3 that'll be the first game I play. It's rare that video games these days appeal to me enough that I'll feel like I'll really miss out if I don't play them. That's one of the few where that's been the case. Breath of the Wild is another one. I might actually develop the patience to play that more than 10 hours if I ever get the chance.

Are you kidding?! (SPOILER) She's immune and Joel lied to her. There's something to tell at least. I have actual faith in Naughty Dog to do it right. They've got some great storytellers.

(SPOILER) Isn't that the point, that it's not cleaned up nicely? Joel murders the Fireflies essentially dooming the last refuge of humanity because he's a rage-filled murder monster that can't fathom the idea of losing another teenage girl in his charge even if it means the extinction of the human race, and Ellie chooses to be in denial and take a leap of faith with Joel despite questionable circumstances because she's scared of the truth. The end is about flawed people making selfish decisions, but we understand them because it would be hard to say we wouldn't do the same thing in their shoes. If the sequel is them going on another road trip to find a new cure, I'm going to jump out a window. I don't want the game to have its cake and eat it, too. It damned Joel at the end, and I want him to stay damned.

I do have to say, sometimes it's better when a story doesn't resolve everything. Some people complained about District 9 not giving any indication of what happens after (SPOILER) the prawns leave, but I think it works better allowing the viewer to decide what they think will happen, and I'm glad they never made a sequel.

Similarly, a lot of people complained that Passengers didn't take a firm stance on every ethical issue it brought up, but I appreciated that the filmmakers decided to leave some ethical ambiguity in the film (even if quite a few reviewers didn't see or understand that, while we're supposed to sympathise with these characters, we're not supposed to approve of all their actions... which is strange, because I'm not sure how much more blatantly the film could have spelled out that several of the actions taken by the central characters were supposed to be, at best, ethically ambiguous, and at worst downright wrong).

I'm also glad the writers of Lost never went into a super-technical explanation of what the island was. They did put a bit too much trust in their audience having knowledge of obscure religious concepts like Gnosticism and Zoroastrianism, which probably explains why a lot of people found the ending to be a lot more confusing than it actually should have been, but I felt that, at least if you understand the concepts behind the series, almost everything that should have been resolved was resolved. I realise this is a controversial opinion, because the series required you to pay close attention to the plot and didn't spell out in advance all the knowledge you'd need to understand the resolution, but most of it does in fact make sense If you possess the requisite knowledge, and they weren't making it up as they went along.

Sometimes allowing the viewer to think rather than telling them what to think is a strength. It has to be done elegantly, because it can just be an excuse for lazy storytelling, but not all stories need sequels.

That said, I can't comment on The Last of Us specifically because I haven't played it.

“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. If you can’t lick ’em, join ’em. If it hurts, repeat it. But to praise despair is to condemn delight, to embrace violence is to lose hold of everything else. We have almost lost hold; we can no longer describe happy man, nor make any celebration of joy.”

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

I’m so sick of arming the world and then sending troops over to destroy the fucking arms, you know what I mean? We keep arming these little countries then we go and blow the shit out of ’em. We’re like the bullies of the world, you know. We’re like Jack Palance in the movie Shane, throwing the pistol at the sheep herder’s feet: “Pick it up.” “I don’t wanna pick it up, mister; you’ll shoot me.” “Pick up the gun.” “Mister, I don’t want no trouble, huh. I just came downtown here to get some hard rock candy for my kids, some gingham for my wife. I don’t even know what gingham is, but she goes through about ten rolls a week of that stuff. I ain’t looking for no trouble, mister.” “Pick up the gun.” Boom, boom. “You all saw him. He had a gun.”

moar I’ll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. “I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.” “I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.” “Hey, wait a minute, there’s one guy holding out both puppets!” “Shut up! Go back to bed, America! Your government is in control. Here's Love Connection. Watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons.”

All governments are liars and murderers. Go back to bed, America! Your government has figured out how it all transpired. Go back to bed, America! Your government is in control again. Here, here’s American Gladiators. Watch this, shut up! Go back to bed, America! Here is American Gladiators; here is 56 channels of it! Watch these pituitary retards bang their fucking skulls together and congratulate you on living in the land of freedom! Here you go, America: You are free to do what we tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!

The Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thoughts, that’s their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thoughts. Hmm… Sounds like… every commercial on television, doesn’t it? You know, when I see those two twins on that Doublemint commercial? I’m not thinking of gum.

I don't like those korean hack and slash games. I honestly don't know what I like right now. I've been having a decent amount of fun playing Invisible Inc, but I swear to god all I want to do is read Pathfinder bestiaries. Proper tabletop games are all I really give a shit about right now.

Try some old-school text adventures. It's like playing D&D with a DM who keeps asking you to rephrase your last action.

Or you could just skip that and go with NetHack, which has gameplay with just as much depth without requiring you to keep rephrasing your input. On the minus side, you will die. And die. And die. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over.

I still think if I were going to get back into gaming at this point, it would probably be NetHack. It may be 30+ years old and entirely text-based, but it has more depth than 99% of games released since.

I'll certainly try it. I used to play Zork quite a bit, until I got sick of solving the same puzzle. That puzzle obviously being trying to pick up on the programmer's speech patterns and figure out exactly the way he/she would phrase something.

While we were waiting for our Pathfinder game to start today, my friend who's really into video games was trying to sell me on some stuff that's coming out. the Friday the 13th game looks great for a LAN party and he also showed me the new game by the folks that made Limbo that seemed cool. I still like a good LAN party game, like Artemis Bridge Simulator or even a few rounds of classic Quake or Unreal Tournament, but that's more about having a good time with your friends and drinking beers than the game itself. I'm just as interested in a good board game.

Some of the later text adventures have much better text parsing than the old Infocom games. Lost Pig is a funny, short game.

I've heard good things about Inside but a lot of people have been saying it's pretty much the exact same game as Limbo. I didn't play Limbo because I already played Another World.

I keep thinking I'll buy Dishonored 2, but then not doing that.

I'm still happy TLOU2 is an Ellie and Joel story, but as I said, I would've trusted ND to make the right decisions and tell the right story if they went without them anyway.
