So far this Absconditus - Katabasis has been the best BM release of the year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTIBtU-MJdc
I expect new VI and new Shrine to top my list. |

No, I haven't. I'll put it on my list of things to check out. (Edit: Rules. I'll have to pick up a vinyl copy sooner or later).
And yeah, Kroda's new album is great. I was disappointed he didn't do any epic-length songs this time around but the compositions are strong enough that it ends up not being a problem. I neglected to name one other highlight of the year, namely Vanum's Realm of Sacrifice. Everything these guys touch seems to turn to gold.

Arcturus still has a couple of elements of black metal, mostly the harsh vocals. But I did label my list "black metal-ish and less so"
![]() Anyway, Ne Obliviscaris released a couple of EPs of old material this year. I could swear I sent you them already. Let me know if you still need them.

I hadn't listened to the Vanum album until a couple days ago, and I don't for the life of me know why, since, as Aaron said, those guys have the Midas touch. It's a fantastic record; nothing groundbreaking or transcendent, but those two dudes really know what they're doing when writing songs and recording them. Both pretty awesome live too, in their respective bands, since I haven't seen Vanum play.
New albums by Krallice, Lychgate, Abyssal, and Anicon are also terrific. And I just got a promo of the forthcoming album by Yellow Eyes, due next month on Gilead Media, and it is by quite far their absolute best. Absolutely amazing riffs from front to back. |
