WISCONSIN.

I just watched Upstart Crow recently. Hard to go wrong with stuff with David Mitchell in it.

INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE

Barb Tadych stands like an idiot in the center of the room.

DOCTOR
You'll want to have a seat, Mrs. Dassey. We need to go over your son's test results.

Barb wanders over to the examination table and sits on it after a moment's struggle with the formidable technology.

DOCTOR
We've gotten your son's test results back.

The doctor pauses a moment, studies his clipboard and adjusts his glasses.

DOCTOR
Ms. Tadych, there's no easy way to say this but your son has a condition. It's incurable.

Barb screws her face up with, visibly straining while trying to understand what the doctor has been saying. She visibly flinches at the world "incurable".

DOCTOR
Ms. Tadych, your son has a condition known as (beat) "Goon Brains".

At this moment a look of realization flashes across Barb's face. She bursts into sobs. Clearly she's heard of this condition before.

BARB
(sobbing)
I didn't know I could pass it on to my son!

DOCTOR
Yes, Ms. Tadych, I wouldn't expect you to understand that.

CUT TO - INTERIOR. WAITING ROOM.

Barb Tadych is standing at the receptionist's table, having just paid in assorted change and old car parts. She gathers up young Brendan Dassey who is muttering under his breath about RAPE AND MURDER. She leads him outside. As we exit we see that the doctor's office is in a strip mall. We track along the strip mall with BARB and BRENDAN. We see a tattoo parlor, a strip club and a trading post. Unkar Plutt is shouting something about quarter portions. They begin to cross the parking lot which we see is filled with hungry stray dogs, engines sitting on cinder blocks and people roasting shoes over burning garbage cans. BARB guides BRENDAN to their home, a piece of cardboard in the parking lot held up by a stick.

BARB
Brendan...

BRENDAN is staring off into the middle distance, right past his mother.

BARB
I don't care what no fancy-pants doctor says, Brendan. You got the brains to become Wisconsin's number one scientist AND heartthrob!

Brendan's demeanor doesn't change, but he does fulfill that destiny.

The Dead Flag Blues
The car is on fire, and there’s no driver at the wheel, and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides, and a dark wind blows. The government is corrupt, and we’re on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn. We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death. The sun has fallen down, and the billboards are all leering, and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

It went like this: The buildings tumbled in on themselves; mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair. The skyline was beautiful on fire, all twisted metal stretching upwards, everything washed in a thin orange haze. I said, “Kiss me, you are beautiful; these are truly the last days.” You grabbed my hand, and we fell into it like a daydream or a fever.

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down; for sure it’s the valley of death. I open up my wallet, and it’s full of blood.

The Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thoughts, that’s their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thoughts. Hmm… Sounds like… every commercial on television, doesn’t it? You know, when I see those two twins on that Doublemint commercial? I’m not thinking of gum. I am thinking of chewing, so maybe that’s the connection they’re trying to make.

I have this feeling man, ’cause you know, it’s just a handful of people who run everything, you know… that’s true, it’s provable. It’s not… I’m not a fucking conspiracy nut; it’s provable. A handful, a very small elite, run and own these corporations, which include the mainstream media. I have this feeling that whoever is elected president, like Clinton was, no matter what you promise on the campaign trail – blah, blah, blah – when you win, you go into this smoke-filled room with the twelve industrialist capitalist scumfucks who got you in there. And you’re in this smoky room, and this little film screen comes down, and a big guy with a cigar goes, “Roll the film.” And it’s a shot of the Kennedy assassination from an angle you’ve never seen before that looks suspiciously like it’s from the grassy knoll. And then the screen goes up and the lights come up, and they go to the new president, “Any questions?” “Er, just what my agenda is.” “First we bomb Baghdad.” “You got it…”

They don’t want the voice of reason spoken, folks, ’cause otherwise, we’d be free. Otherwise, we wouldn’t believe their fucking horseshit lies, nor the fucking propaganda machine of the mainstream media and buy their horseshit products that we don’t fucking need and become a third world consumer fucking plantation, which is what we’re becoming. Fuck them! They are liars and murderers. All governments are liars and murderers, and I am now Jesus, and this is MY compound.

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly coloured and it’s very loud and it’s fun for awhile. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, “hey – don't worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride…” And we… kill those people. Haha. “Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.” It’s just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King mudered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan… wounded. But it doesn’t matter because it’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. Thank you; you’ve been great.

Doctor Who series 10 was really good overall. A few things didn’t quite gel for me (the Monks trilogy kind of fell apart at the end) but for once Moffat actually closed the series with a finale that wasn’t underwhelming compared to the previous episodes (by contrast, see Smith’s last episode, which underdeveloped a number of good ideas in its attempt to tie together all the loose ends of Smith’s run, in comparison to the 50th anniversary special; or “Hell Bent”, a good enough episode on its own terms, in comparison to “Heaven Sent”, a legit contender for best standalone episode of the series’ entire history). (SPOILER) Also looking forward to seeing David Bradley as the First Doctor; I haven’t looked forward that much to a surprise appearance on the show since John Hurt as the War Doctor.

Overall, the more I think about the last series, the more I like it. There’s far more beneath the surface than you think is even possible when you’re first watching it. There’s fantastic writing about issues like deontology versus utilitarianism, punishment versus rehabilitation, whether people can change, and so on that you don’t even realise are being explored until you spend time thinking about the episodes, because they’re not written as a philosophical treatise; they’re just using the most important rule of writing, Show, don’t tell, unbelievably effectively. I’m actually a bit jealous of how good this series was; it’s probably the most thorough examination I’ve seen in pop culture of utilitarianism versus deontology since Watchmen.

Moffat also went out on a high note with his characterisation; the changes these characters go through are depicted believably, and they’re complex individuals with the full gamut of human (or Gallifreyan) emotions. I’m really, really going to miss Capaldi and Gomez in particular. (SPOILER) Gomez’ character arc over her time on the show was fantastic, and she brought a fantastic emotional range to one of the most complex characters in the show’s history. I don’t believe for one second that the character is permanently dead, but I do suspect she’s telling the truth about not intending to return. With no slight intended on any of the others who have portrayed the character, she’s probably been my second favourite in the role after Jacobi, with the caveat that I haven’t seen most of the Classic Who Master serials.

Also, too, I’m extremely pleased with Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor. She was fantastic in Broadchurch, which is proof enough that Chibnall already knows how to write to her strengths. There are some scenes in that show that probably wouldn’t work without her. I found it frustratingly inconsistent overall (the first series was brilliant, but I found the second one unwatchable, though that was mostly because the portrayal of the legal system destroyed my suspension of disbelief), but I’m still looking forward to what he does as showrunner; it sounds like he’s spent a long time thinking about where to take the show.

I need to get caught up with Orphan Black and Game of Thrones. Hopefully after exams I’ll have time.

I never knew a man could tell so many lies
He had a different story for every set of eyes
How can he remember who he’s talking to?
’Cause I know it ain’t me, and I hope it isn’t you
I’m armed to the teeth
Like a fucking animal
I ruin everything
I get my bony hands on

And here we go now over the bridge of sighs
We will get a cross like Christ, crucified
It’s like a birth but it is in reverse
Never gets better, always gets worse
Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.
Vaulting, veering, vomiting up the values that victimized me, feeling vast,
feeling virginal... was this how he felt? This verve, this vitality... this vision...

I’m so sick of arming the world and then sending troops over to destroy the fucking arms, you know what I mean? We keep arming these little countries then we go and blow the shit out of ’em. We’re like the bullies of the world, you know. We’re like Jack Palance in the movie Shane, throwing the pistol at the sheep herder’s feet: “Pick it up.” “I don’t wanna pick it up, mister; you’ll shoot me.” “Pick up the gun.” “Mister, I don’t want no trouble, huh. I just came downtown here to get some hard rock candy for my kids, some gingham for my wife. I don’t even know what gingham is, but she goes through about ten rolls a week of that stuff. I ain’t looking for no trouble, mister.” “Pick up the gun.” Boom, boom. “You all saw him. He had a gun.”

moar I’ll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. “I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.” “I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.” “Hey, wait a minute, there’s one guy holding out both puppets!” “Shut up! Go back to bed, America! Your government is in control. Here's Love Connection. Watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons.”

All governments are liars and murderers. Go back to bed, America! Your government has figured out how it all transpired. Go back to bed, America! Your government is in control again. Here, here’s American Gladiators. Watch this, shut up! Go back to bed, America! Here is American Gladiators; here is 56 channels of it! Watch these pituitary retards bang their fucking skulls together and congratulate you on living in the land of freedom! Here you go, America: You are free to do what we tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!

I got to the Monk episodes and couldn't force myself to keep going. Would there be any difficulty in skipping those?

The new Twin Peaks is... there are no words for how good it is. It's necessary to have seen the original series + Fire Walk With Me first though.

Probably not necessary to watch the whole episode arc. You can probably skip everything in those that doesn't have Missy in it. Same might go for the couple of episodes after that if you don't like them. The two-part finale is absolutely brilliant from start to finish though.

I really need to watch Twin Peaks at some point. I don't have Showtime, though, sadly.

So, I just pounded through Twin Peaks: The Return over the long weekend.

I have lots of conflicting opinions and want to talk about it.

First thing, 1/3 of it was incredible and amazing. 1/3 was good. 1/3 was fucking abysmal.

There were parts I didn't enjoy watching that much but... abysmal? Even the (SPOILER) Audrey stuff at least worked on a thematic level, kinda.

I hated everything that happened in Nevada so much. It wasn't funny, or interesting, or necessary, or touching, or deep.

When I re-watch it in the future it's going to be pretty tough not to fast forward through it as quickly as possible.

Dougie and The Mitchum brothers were amazing.

Why was Dougie amazing? Everything about it was painful. I'll grant you the Mitchum brothers.

I threw my hands up and yelled what the fuck when Ike the Spike ran around the office.

Episode 3 and episode 8 were more or less amazing though.

Dunno, just thought the whole thing was hilarious. I guess I can see how it might have worn thin after a dozen episodes but... it didn't? If nothing else I liked having something more lighthearted to break up the heavier stuff that was going on.
