Look, after many years of gaming I've opted to forgo scrutinizing all the intricacies of the big name turds shat out by EA and their ilk (yes, I have a grudge against EA - let me!), in favor of just assuming that if it's popular (or at least aims to appeal to the broadest of demographics) it just doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of being good. I do this to avoid disappointment and, though I remain open to the idea that I'm wrong, experience has shown me that generally I'm not. "Popular = Shit", while certainly not an absolute truth, is a very handy rule of thumb to keep in the back of one's head. It's not just me trying to be alternative, here; the fact of the matter is that big titles usually end up shooting themselves in the foot by desperately trying to appeal to fucking everyone. Being very good in a narrow niche is always going to be favorable to being mediocre at everything - and that's exactly what most current gen. titles are. That and the fact that they're produced by the nameless, faceless and soulless, first generation descendants of Satan.

edit: Also, I just saw Yahtzee's review of Borderlands and it seemed to confirm my preconceptions of the game.

Mike, didn't you get the memo about Activision taking over from EA as the biggest source of evil in the gaming industry? Their CEO really needs to be shot for the greater good. Mostly because of statements like this:

The games Activision Blizzard didn't pick up, he said, "don't have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million franchises. … I think, generally, our strategy has been to focus… on the products that have those attributes and characteristics, the products that we know [that] if we release them today, we'll be working on them 10 years from now."

If that sounds like it would create a corporate culture that isn't all sunshine and hugs, then it's mission accomplished for Kotick. The executive said that he has tried to instill into the company culture "skepticism, pessimism, and fear" of the global economic downturn, adding, "We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression."
